As part of the MENTBEST project, a workshop with journalists was held to promote ethical media practices in reporting on mental health and suicide.
During the session, our experts, Gentiana Qirjako and Arlinda Cerga Pashoja, gave a press interview highlighting the crucial role of the media in shaping public understanding of mental health. They emphasised the need for accurate, sensitive, and responsible reporting to prevent stigma and avoid harmful narratives. The discussion focused on how journalists can balance the public’s right to information with the ethical obligation to protect individuals’ dignity. Attention was drawn to avoiding sensationalism, respecting privacy, and including information about available mental health support resources. A brief guidance document on ethical reporting of suicide was also shared, providing practical recommendations for journalists to ensure compassionate and evidence-based coverage of such topics.
